Brenda May Dances for Quota International of Atascadero
Article by Grenda Ernst

The graceful and accomplished Brenda May is Quota's Community Star for Dancing with Our Stars, 2018. A list of her activities reflects her extensive involvement in her community and her commitment to being of service to others: Quota Club International of Atascadero, Senior Nutrition, Historical Society, Atascadero Educational Foundation Board member in support of the Robotics Team, Volunteer Coordinator for Atascadero Coats for Kids, ECHO meals, Atascadero Community Church Council plus band, chimes, choir and the North County Coalition Association.

And there is more in the activities column! Brenda has been a hairdresser for 48 plus years and presently works at Heart and Soles Day Spa in Atascadero. And there is yet more! Brenda has been a fitness instructor for 30 years and currently teaches a program three mornings a week focused on active senior citizens. She has danced in the Nutcracker family scene with Class Act Dance and does some spiritual dance at her church. It seems only natural that this busy woman would want to take on the assignment of Community Star. She tells us that she is proud to represent Quota: "I feel honored to have the privilege of dancing to raise funds to continue Quota's good works, and have such fun at the same time!"

Brenda strongly believes in what Quota stands for: a major supporter of hearing and speech issues, supplying hearing aids to children who cannot afford them. Quota conducts other community projects benefiting women and children, produces the annual Colony Days Tea, and fills packages for soldiers, among other undertakings. Brenda has shared that she is a survivor of child abuse and her philosophy is: "We can rise above where we came from if we just believe in ourselves and we do not allow others to bring us down."

In our book, Brenda has indeed soared and she has been acknowledged for her talent and her willingness to contribute. As a classified employee of the Atascadero School District, she received the Classified Employee of the Year award. And in 2000, she and her husband were named the Lay Citizens of the Year. Long time Atascadero residents - 29 years - she and her husband raised their children here because "it is such a beautiful place to raise a family." And a beautiful place in which to dance.

Brenda's choreographer and dancing partner is Brian Reeves, who has partnered Community Stars for several years, as well as being part of DWOS production numbers. Remember his star turn as the King from the King and I. Brian has taught dancing and competed as a dancer for over a decade and his daytime job is a music producer and recording engineer for 40 plus years, with gold and platinum records in his resume. Brian does the important work of being the sound man for DWOS, editing the Community Star's music to fit the format of the show.
